How Big is Big?

The Gulf spill over New York

We all know the oil spill in the Gulf is enormous but there is an amazing website that now allows you to overlay the profile of the oil slick on Google Earth maps- giving you a very tangible (and horrifying) sense of the scale of this thing. And as staggering as these images are you have to remember that this overhead view does not account for volume. The slick itself has a depth but there are now reports of enormous subsurface plumes of oil in the Gulf and many are concerned that the millions of gallons of dispersants used to break up the oil slick are also quickening the oil’s voyage via currents around Florida and out into the Atlantic where it can reap even more environmental havoc. Bad news all around.
